WorldCare Multidisciplinary Case Reviews for Serious & Complex Conditions

This core offering is available for 100+ serious and complex conditions.

WorldCare medical second opinions (MSOs) are provided by our WorldCare Consortium hospitals and health systems, top-ranked institutions that lead the world in researching and treating these conditions. Their specialists work routinely on rare or complex cases that most doctors see only a few times in their careers.

A WorldCare MSO connects members to this knowledge and innovation. No other MSO provides as much clinical rigor and personal support.

Each case is reviewed by a multidisciplinary team of 4 to 7 specialists, selected for their expertise in the member’s condition.

WorldCare builds a complete picture of the member’s health (including medical history, lab records, imaging, tissue samples, and personal concerns) and securely delivers it to The WorldCare Consortium® hospital whose expertise is best for the case.

Specialists re-examine pathology slides, imaging, and all records before consolidating their findings into a comprehensive MSO report, including:

The member’s case manager walks through the report with the member. They provide handoff and transition coaching to help the member talk to their family and their doctor and take next steps.

Receiving a diagnosis of a serious or complex condition can be stressful and confusing. Seeking an MSO brings clarity and can give members a sense of control and confidence in their next steps.

WorldCare provides personal support throughout the MSO process. Every member has a dedicated case manager, either a nurse or an in-country medical director, who understands their language and guides them through the process.

This personal support includes:

Specialty Case Reviews

WorldCare’s Specialty Case Reviews combine the unmatched clinical rigor and personal support of our core multidisciplinary MSO with special additional services. We built them in response to the current high focus on Mental Health and Cancer.

Each Specialty Case Review incorporates new scientific developments in screening, diagnostics, and personalized medicine. They can be bundled with the core MSO or offered as standalone programs for insurers, TPAs, employers, and chronic condition management partners.

The Premier Cancer Case Review expands our core Multidisciplinary Expert Review by adding two critical enhancements: mental well-being guidance and pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing.

Mental Wellbeing Integration
Up to 75% of cancer patients experience significant psychological distress, which can negatively impact outcomes and increase total cost of care. Each Premier Cancer Expert Review includes input from a psychiatrist who provides personalized recommendations on coping with stress, communicating with family, navigating treatment, and accessing local support resources.

Pharmacogenomic (PGx) Testing
PGx testing provides personalized insights into which medications are likely to be most effective, and which might cause side effects, based on the member’s genetic profile. Each Mental Illness Expert Review offers PGx testing to avoid adverse drug reactions and improve therapeutic outcomes.

WorldCare is the first MSO provider to offer a dedicated Mental Illness Expert Review. This review is available for bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, major depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, conditions not included among the 100+ in our core MSO.

These reviews are led by psychiatrists experienced in virtual diagnosis and treatment.

They include:

Pharmacogenomic (PGx) Testing
Because medication variation is a major factor in mental health care, Each review offers PGx testing to help avoid medications with the highest likelihood of effectiveness and tolerability. This supports faster stabilization, avoids ineffective treatments, and helps prevent symptom progression.

Our Multidisciplinary Review Framework

1

Comprehensive Case File Assembly

Each case file is built from a full set of clinical and contextual materials, which may include:

  • Medical records from primary and specialist providers

  • Tissue samples for re-examination in WorldCare Consortium laboratories

  • Radiology files (X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and other imaging)

  • Case manager notes capturing relevant clinical and personal context

  • Pharmacogenomics (PGx) results or other previously completed diagnostic tests

This ensures the reviewing team has a complete and accurate picture of the member’s health history.

2

Clinical Review & Hospital Assignment

A WorldCare nurse reviews every case package to verify completeness and determine which WorldCare Consortium institution is best suited to conduct the medical second opinion based on the condition, clinical complexity, and subspecialty needs.

3

Multidisciplinary Expert Analysis

The selected Consortium hospital assembles a multidisciplinary team to review all clinical materials. This includes re-examining imaging, pathology slides, laboratory data, and existing diagnoses.

Specialists refine diagnostic accuracy, identify potential misdiagnoses, and recommend additional testing when appropriate.

4

Final Medical Second Opinion Report

The comprehensive MSO Report details:

  • Diagnosis confirmation or updates

  • Evidence-based treatment recommendations

  • Relevant emerging therapies, medications, or clinical trials

  • Local considerations and resource options

  • Responses to questions raised during the case submission

This final report enables clear, confident decision-making for members and their treating physicians.
